A local man was pronounced dead Monday evening after being pulled from a car that had plunged into the pond in the New Lenox Commons.

After being pulled from the vehicle by a dive team, Andrew Jurvich, 49, of Joliet, was pronounced dead around 10 p.m. at Silver Cross Hospital, said Louis Alessandrini, a New Lenox deputy police chief.

Around 8:50 p.m., a New Lenox police officer was flagged down by a witness who had seen a car crash into the pond at the New Lenox Commons, just steps away from the New Lenox Police Department.
