Prior to his final two seasons at Lincoln-Way Central, Ryan Vice was a first baseman with a powerful bat who had never spent much time pitching.
That all changed in the summer before his junior year.
“People always told me I should pitch, because I’m tall [6-foot-4] and everything,” Vice said. “I wanted to give it a shot and gain experience.
“I went to a tryout for the Chicago Elite travel team and pitched. I was throwing 87 or 88 [miles per hour] right away and they were like ‘OK, you’re on the team.’”
